THE THEORY OF FLIGHT
HELENA BONHAM CARTER portrays
a young woman determined to experience love amidst extraordinary
circumstances in one of her most unusual and complex roles to
date. Bonham Carter most recently drew acclaim and multiple awards
including a Best Actress Oscar® nomination for a very different
performance as a woman immersed in a turn-of-the-century love
triangle in Ian Softley's adaptation of Wings of the Dove.
She was also recently cited as Best Actress by Canada's Genie
Awards for Margaret's Museum and received an Emmy nomination
for her appearance as the sorceress Morgan Le Fey in the lauded
television miniseries "Merlin." Bonham Carter will next
be seen in Fightclub for director David Fincher starring
with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.
Born and raised in London, Bonham Carter was educated at London's
Westminster School and pursued an academic career before being
persuaded by director Trevor Nunn to star in his film Lady
Jane. On the last shooting day of that film, James Ivory offered
her the ingenue lead in A Room With A View. It was the
first of a series of E.M. Forster adaptations that would bring
her international acclaim, followed by Where Angels Fear
To Tread, Howard's End and a memorable cameo in Maurice.
Opposite Mel Gibson, she played Ophelia in Franco Zefirelli's
Hamlet. Other roles include Woody Allen's wife in Mighty
Aphrodite, Elizabeth in Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's
Frankenstein and the fairy-tale musical "The Princess
and the Pea."
Among her more contemporary film and television roles are a victim
of anorexia in Getting It Right, a stripper in
Dancing Queen and the widow of Lee Harvey Oswald in the
telefilm "Fatal Deception." Other television credits
include "Arms and the Man," "Beatrix Potter,"
"A Hazard of Hearts" as well as a guest appearance on
Her stage appearances include "Woman In White," "The
Chalk Garden," "House of Bernarda Alba" and "Trelawny
of the Wells."
