JOE JOHNSTON (Director) has established himself as an accomplished director of major feature films after beginning his career as an Academy Award®-winning creator of visual effects on some of the highest-grossing films in history.

The former Austin, Texas resident began his work as a special effects designer for Lucasfilm Ltd./Industrial Light & Magic on the film Star Wars. The huge box office success of that film led to many more film assignments, including visual effects art director on the blockbuster hits, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

The filmmaker went on to share an Academy Award® for special visual effects for his work on Raiders of the Lost Ark. He was visual effects art director for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, second unit director on Batteries Not Included and supervisor of the complex serial sequences in Always. He was production designer on the television film The Ewok Adventure and its sequel, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor (on which he also served as second unit director).

Moving into filmmaking, Johnston was associate producer of the fantasy adventure, Willow, before earning his first feature directorial assignment on Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. The international success of that film led to his directing The Rocketeer.

Most recently, he directed the adventure/fantasy Jumanji starring Robin Williams. He also directed the "Princeton, 1916" episode of the television series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.
