JENNIFER JASON LEIGH
portrays ALLEGRA GELLER, a super-star game designer on the run
from fanatics. A veteran of nearly 40 films, Leigh has proven
during her impressive film career that she is an actress of enormous
range. Her extensive, in-depth research, which allows her to immerse
herself both physically and psychologically in the characters
she portrays, has garnered her many awards.
Among these awards are Best Actress at the 1995 Montreal Film
Festival and the New York Film Critics Circle's Best Actress in
the title role in Georgia. Directed by Ulu Grosbard, this
film was a deeply personal work, which she also co-produced. For
her portrayal of the legendary Dorothy Parker in Alan Rudolph's
Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Leigh received the
Best Actress citation from the National Society of Film Critics
and the Chicago Film Critics. In 1990, she won both the New York
Film Critics Circle and Boston Society of Film Critics awards
for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Miami Blues and
Last Exit to Brooklyn. Following eXistenZ, Leigh has
performed on Broadway for six months as the legendary Sally Bowles
Recently, Leigh worked with Robert Altman on Kansas City,
marking her second association with the director, with whom she
first collaborated on Short Cuts. The same year she starred
in Bastard Out Of Carolina, Angelica Huston's directorial
debut, and received wide praise for her performance as the shy
heiress in Washington Square.
Leigh made her feature film debut in 1980 in Eyes of a Stranger,
and then registered strongly with both critics and audiences for
her performance as the reluctant virgin in Amy Heckerling's Fast
Times at Ridgemont High. A series of movies followed in rapid
succession, including Wrong is Right, Easy Money, Grandview,
USA, The Men's Club, The Hitcher and The Big Picture,
all shot in the 1980s. In 1991, Leigh appeared with an ensemble
cast in Ron Howard's Backdraft and starred in Lili Fini
Zanuck's Rush and Michael Bortman's Crooked Hearts.
The next year, she played the sinister roommate in Barbet Schroeder's
Single White Female, followed by Short Cuts, the
Coen brother's The Hudsucker Proxy, Taylor Hackford's Dolores
Claiborne and Jocelyn Moorehouse's A Thousand Acres.
