Welsh born actress CATHERINE ZETA-JONES
(Gin) recently received the 1999 ShoWest award for best supporting
actress of the year. She starred in the blockbuster The Mask
of Zorro, opposite Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins, and
directed by Martin Campbell. She was offered the role of Elena,
Zorro's daughter, after executive producer Steven Spielberg saw
her performance in the television mini-series Titanic.
Zeta-Jones began her career on the London stage where she was
in the chorus as well as an understudy in the musical 42nd
Street. Asked to take over the lead one night, she quickly
moved into a starring role, which she played for the next two
years. She then found success on U.K. television for her role
as Marietta in the high-rated The Darling Buds of May, adapted
from the novels of H.E. Bates.
Before leaving England for Hollywood, she starred in the feature
film Blue Juice, with Ewan McGregor, and the popular television
adaptation of Thomas Hardy's The Return of the Native.
In addition to starring in the Titanic mini-series, Zeta-Jones
took the title role in the Golden Globe-winning mini-series Catherine
the Great, and co-starred in the big budget adventure film
Zeta-Jones will next star with Liam Neeson in the thriller The
Haunting, directed by Jan De Bont.
