(Rita Escobar) gave up a successful career as a major television
star in Latin America and moved to the United States to start
over even though she spoke no English. Since then, Hayek has accumulated
an impressive list of credits as both an actress and a producer.
Hayek made her feature film debut as an actress with a small role
in Allison Anders' "Mi Vida Loca" and played her first
starring role in Robert Rodriguez's "Desperado" oppositeAntonio
Banderas. Her other film credits include the upcoming features
"Dogma" and "The Velocity of Gary," as well
as "Fools Rush In," "54," "The Faculty,"
the award-winning "Midaq Alley," "From Dusk Till
Dawn" and "Fled." Her telefilm credits include
Rodriguez's "Roadracers" for Showtime and "The
Hunchback" for TNT.
As a producer, Hayek has also recently returned from Cannes where
the Mexican feature "No One Writes to the Colonel,"
which she co-produced through her Ventanarosa production company,
was in official competition. The film is based on a novel by Gabriel
Garcia Marquez. Hayek also co-produced "The Velocity of Gary,"
in which she stars opposite Vincent D'Onofrio and Thomas Jane,
and she is in pre-production on the Frida Kahlo biopic, a co-production
with Miramax in which Hayek plays the title role. Ventanarosa
recently added television production to its producer credits with
a first-look deal with Columbia TriStar Television and Telemundo
to produce television programs in English and Spanish.
