JOAQUIN PHOENIX as Lewis, is the lynchpin of the story. Locked away in a Malaysian prison for drug dealing and a reckless incident he and his friends committed on vacation two years prior, he will be executed if they do not step forward and share responsibility.

Phoenix, who comes from a family of thespians, including his late brother River, began his career as a young actor, first appearing on the silver screen in 1989 as Dianne Wiest's teenage son in Ron Howard's Parenthood.

But, it was his critically acclaimed performance as the troubled Jimmy in Gus Van Sant's 1995 black comedy To Die For, which won his co-star, Nicole Kidman, a Golden Globe award, that thrust Joaquin into the national spotlight. He recently starred in Pat O'Connor's Inventing the Abbotts opposite Liv Tyler. Before that, he appeared opposite Sean Penn and Nick Nolte in Oliver Stone's U-Turn.

After bonding as friends, both on-screen and off, in the upcoming Clay Pigeons, Phoenix reteamed with Vaughn for Return to Paradise. Currently, Joaquin is starring with Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and James Caan in The Yards for Miramax. He resides in New York City.
