KATHRYN ERBE was born in the Boston, Massachusetts area and lived there until she reached the age of 16, when she went off to college. Shortly before graduating from the New York University undergraduate drama program, she debuted on television when she was cast as Lynn Redgrave's daughter on the sitcom, "Chicken Soup."

Later returning to New York City, she joined the cast of The Steppenwolf Broadway production of The Grapes of Wrath, which enjoyed a six-month run and won the 1 990 Tony Award for best play. Erbe left that production two weeks before it closed to make her feature debut, playing Anna, the daughter of Richard Dreyfuss and Julie Haggerty and friend of Bill Murray in the Disney film, What About Bob?

Shortly after, Erbe went back to Broadway to star in Steve Tesich's The Speed of Darkness, for which she was nominated for a Tony Award for best supporting actress. She then joined Albert Finney, Piper Laurie and Alfre Woodard, among others, to star in Bruce Beresford's film, Rich in Love, written by Alfred Uhry.

As a member of both The Steppenwolf Theatre Company and The Atlantic Theatre Company, she has performed in many world premiere productions by new playwrights, including Tom Donaghy and Alex Gersten. More recently, she appeared in the independent films Dream with the Fishes, with David Arquette, Love From Ground Zero, and Entropy, written and directed by Phil Joanou and costarring Stephen Dorff. Erbe also plays the infamous Shirley Bellinger on the acclaimed HBO series, "Oz," alongside her husband, Terry Kinney.

She and Kinney live in Brooklyn with their daughter Maeve.
