ANGELA BASSETT plays Janet Williams, the tough-minded school administrator who gives Roberta the chance to teach music.

Bassett received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award, in 1994, for her portrayal of Tina Turner in WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT. She starred, most recently, in HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK, the screen adaptation of Terry McMillan's novel. She had previously starred in another McMillan adaptation, WAITING TO EXHALE." She can next be seen in the film SUPERNOVA.

She had previously worked with Wes Craven in A VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN" and in an episode of his television series. "Nightmare Cafe." Bassett's film credits also include CONTACT, MALCOLM X, BOYZ 'N' THE HOOD, STRANGE DAYS, FIX, and CITY OF HOPE. She also starred as Katherine Jackson in the mini-series "The Jacksons: An American Dream." Like Streep, she is a graduate of the Yale School of Drama with stage roots. She has appeared in stage productions including: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Colored People's Time, Black Girl, Henry IV, Part I. and Joe Turner's Come and Gone.
