ADAM SANDLER (Bobby Boucher/Written by/Executive Producer)
has made the transition from "Saturday Night Live" to
the big screen auspiciously with a rapid-fire succession of such
hit films as the box-office smash "The Wedding Singer,"
"Billy Madison," and "Happy Gilmore."
"The Wedding Singer," for which Adam Sandler received
the ShowEast Star of the Year Award, was the first box-office
hit of 1998, with an opening weekend gross of more than $22 million.
With a budget of just $12 million, "Happy Gilmore" was
one of the most successful movies of 1996, grossing over $40 million
at the box office and $35 million on video. At the 10th Annual
Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, "Happy Gilmore" was
nominated for Best Picture.
Sandler's "Billy Madison" is a cult classic at colleges
across the country, where students have "Billy" nights
and Sandler festivals.
During breaks from his busy filming schedule, Sandler has played
to sold-out crowds at most colleges in the U.S. and has made two
Grammy-nominated comedy albums for Warner Brothers that, collectively,
have sold over 3 million copies to date. He also did a small comedy/rock
tour in conjunction with the release of his third album, "What's
Your Name?" He is currently writing and recording his fourth
If you dig a little deeper, you'll find Sandler has had a unique
career. "Billy Madison," "Happy Gilmore,"
and "The Waterboy" are all based on Sandler's original
ideas, and he shares screenwriting credits on all three with "Saturday
Night Live" head writer Tim Herlihy. For Sandler's next project,
he will be shooting "Big Daddy" in New York this fall.
But that's only part of the story. What is most striking about
Sandler is that he works with a talented group of friends. The
writer, director, and producer of "The Waterboy" were
his roommates at New York University. According to Sandler, this
creates a comfortable environment, because "I like working
with people I've seen in just a towel."
