NIGEL HAWTHORNE stars as the pro-slavery U.S. President Martin Van Buren.

Hawthorne earned an Academy Award® nomination for his performance in the title role of Nicholas Hytner's "The Madness of King George." Hawthorne had originated the role on stage with Britain's Royal National Theatre, winning Best Actor honors from the Olivier Awards, the London Evening Standard and Timeout Magazine.

His numerous London stage credits also include "Shadowlands," which he later took to Broadway, winning the 1991 Tony and New York Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Actor for his performance.

On television, Hawthorne starred in the BBC series "Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister," for which he won a total of four BAFTA Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy, as well as a Cable ACE nomination.

He next stars with Frances McDormand in "Madeline." His other feature film credits include "Gandhi," "Firefox," "Demolition Man" and "Richard III." He most recently reunited with director Nicholas Hytner on the upcoming "Object of My Affection."

In 1987, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II honored Hawthorne with a CBE (Commander of the British Empire).
