DJIMON HOUNSON portrays Cinque, the leader of the Africans'
rebellion against their captors. The part of Cinque in "Amistad"
marks Hounsou's first film starring role. He more recently completed
work on the upcoming feature "Deep Rising," due out

A native of Benin, West Africa, Hounsou moved to Paris at the
age of 13 to get a better education. When he was 22, he was discovered
by fashion designer Thierry Mughler who enlisted him for several
designer campaigns as well as his book Thierry Mughler's Photographs.
He was subsequently spotted by director David Fincher, who cast
him in three music videos: Steve Winwood's "Roll With It,"
Madonna's "Express Yourself" and Paula Abdul's "Straight
Up." He also worked with Herb Ritts on the noted photography
book Men and Women, as well as Janet Jackson's video "Love
Will Never Do Without You."
In 1990, Hounsou came to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.
He had a small role in the thriller "Unlawful Entry"
and was also seen in the science fiction hit "StarGate,"
directed by Roland Emmerich.
