THE POSTMAN
TOM PETTY (Mayor) is one of rock music's most popular,
successful and well respected songwriters, musicians and performers.
A native of Gainsville, Florida, Petty was raised on the rock
'n' roll music of the 1050s and '60s. He formed his group, The
Heartbreakers, in the mid-'70s and released his first album, Tom
Petty and the Heartbreakers, in 1976. This gold-selling record
featured one of Petty's signature songs, "Breakdown."
Tom Petty's career highlights to date include the release of 15
multimillion-selling albums, including Damn the Torpedoes, Full
Moon Fever and Wildflowers. Two of these albums were recorded
without the Heartbreakers, and two were recorded with the "supergroup"
the Traveling Wilburys; featuring fellow musicians Bob Dylan,
George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. Hit Petty singles
include "American Girl," "Refugee," "The
Waiting," "Free Fallin'," "I Won't Back Down"
and "You Don't Know How It Feels." He is known as an
artist whose songs are direct honest and powerful.
Tom Petty has been nominated for nine Grammy awards, winning one
in 1989 with the Traveling Wilburys and another in 1995 for his
song "You Don't Know How It Feels." He also won the
MTV Video Vanguard Award for his array of creative and critically
acclaimed music videos.
