SEAN PATRICK THOMAS (Derek) can currently be seen in the CBS series "The District."
He co-starred in such films as "Cruel Intentions." opposite Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar: "Can't Hardly Wait"; "Picture Perfect": and Ed Zwick's war drama "Courage Under Fire," in which he played a Marine during the Gulf War. He also starred in Tanya Fenmore's directorial debut, "The Sterling Chase." He will next be seen on the big screen in the horror film "Dracula 2000."
Growing up in Wilmington. Delaware, Thomas expressed no interest in acting until he enrolled in the University of Virginia. Although he majored in English, he dabbled in the performing arts at the suggestion of one of his counselors. He pursued the craft as a graduate student at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned his MFA. He began his professional career in New York working in the theater, where his roles included "Timon of Athens" at the Public Theater.
His other stage credits include the Young Playwright's Festival presentation of "This Is About a Boy's Fear," "As You Like It" at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts, and such regional productions as "Cooley High," "The Amen Corner," "Twelfth Night" and "Six Degrees of Separation."
