AN EVERLASTING PIECE
BARRY LEVINSON (Director/Producer) is an award-winning director, writer, and
producer. He won an Academy Award® for Best Director, as well as the Directors
Guild of America Award, for Rain Man, which won a total of four Oscars®,
including Best Picture. Levinson also received Oscar nominations for Best
Director and Best Picture for Bugsy, which garnered 10 nominations in
all. In addition, he has been honored with Academy Award nominations for Best
Screenplay for the films …And Justice for All, Diner, and Avalon,
the latter two of which he also directed.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Levinson has used his hometown as the setting
for several of his films, as in last year's acclaimed drama Liberty Heights.
His other recent directing credits include the Oscar-nominated political satire Wag
the Dog and the science fiction thriller Sphere. He is currently
directing Bandits, starring Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Cate
Blanchett.
In addition, he has directed such diverse films as The Natural, Young
Sherlock Holmes, Good Morning, Vietnam, and Disclosure, and
wrote and directed Sleepers, Jimmy Hollywood, Toys, and Tin
Men. His other screenwriting credits include the Mel Brooks comedies Silent
Movie and High Anxiety, as well as Inside Moves, Best
Friends, and Unfaithfully Yours.
In 1998, Levinson partnered with Paula Weinstein to form Baltimore/Spring
Creek Pictures. The company's hits include this year's blockbuster The
Perfect Storm, which Levinson executive produced, and the comedy smash Analyze
This, teaming Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal. Levinson has also produced
or executive produced a number of his directing projects, in addition to such
films as Donnie Brasco and HBO's The Second Civil War.
Levinson has also been honored for his work on television. He won an Emmy
Award for Best Director for an episode of the series Homicide: Life on the
Street, which he executive produced. He more recently executive produced the
series Falcone and Oz, and has also produced the long-form
projects The Path to War, American Tragedy, and Suspicion.
