Already a superstar in her native Spain, PENELOPE CRUZ is poised on the brink
of stardom here in America. First introduced to American audiences in the
Spanish films, Jamon, Jamon and Belle Epoque, in 1998 she starred
in her first English language film, Hi-Lo Country, for director Stephen
Frears and opposite Woody Harrelson, Patricia Arquette and Billy Crudup.
Most recently, she starred in Pedro Almovodar's All About My Mother,
which was awarded a Golden Globe for best foreign film.
Last year, Cruz was the recipient of the Best Actress award at the 13th Annual
Goya Awards given by the Spanish Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences
for her role in Fernando Trueba's The Girl of Your Dreams. Other film
credits include Almovodar's Live Flesh, Talk of Angels and Don Juan.
Confirming her status as Spain's hottest international actress, Cruz landed
the coveted role opposite Matt Damon in last year's film adaptation of All
the Pretty Horses, directed by Billy Bob Thornton. In the film, Cruz plays a
Mexican girl from an upper class family that discourages her romance with Damon.
In 2000, Cruz also portrayed Isabella in Woman on Top. The film, a
whimsical tale of a gifted gourmand who journeys across the world in search of
success, but ultimately finds herself is directed by Fina Torres.
Other recent films include her starring role in the thriller, Open Your Eyes,
and the romance, Twice Upon a Yesterday.
