WE WERE SOLDIERS

SAM ELLIOTT (Sergeant Major Basil Plumley) recently starred in the political thriller "The Contender," with Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges and Gary Qldman. Other film credits include "The Big Lebowski," Stephen Frears' "The Hi-Lo Country," "Tombstone," "Gettysburg," "Sibling Rivalry," "Road House," "Fatal Beauty," opposite Whoopi Goldberg and "The Mask," with Cher and Eric Stoltz. He re-teamed with Stephen Frears in the highly praised TV adaptation of the Cold War drama "Fail Safe." Elliott earned Emmy and Golden Glob nominations for his work in the telefilm "Buffalo Girls," and he produced and starred in two of the highest-rated cable projects ever: "You Know My Name," for which he won a Golden Boot Award, and "Conagher."

Elliott, as critic Leonard Maltin points out, is known for his portrayal of "laconic loners," particularly in the Western genre. In fact, he made his movie debut on "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid." He went on to attract critical attention as the aging title character in "Lifeguard," with Kathleen Quinlan and Anne Archer. He also starred in the TV miniseries "The Sacketts" and "The Shadow Riders."
