MAGGIE SMITH (Caro) is one of Britain's acting treasures, scoring innumerable triumphs on the stage both in England and on Broadway, as well as the screen. Her most recent film role was in Robert Altman's Gosford Park, for which she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Smith first came to the attention of American audiences with her dynamic Oscar-winning performance as an eccentric schoolmistress in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She earned another Best Actress nomination for her picturesque portrayal in Travels With My Aunt, and won her second Oscar playing an actress who's nominated for an Oscar and loses in the funniest episode of Neil Simon's California Suite. She was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for her impeccable work in the Merchant Ivory production Room With a View, and also appeared in their Quartet.

Smith has appeared in many mainstream feature films, often playing comedic characters, including Murder by Death, Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun, as well as the hugely popular Sister Act and its sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and Hook. She has also starred in highly acclaimed dramas such as Tea With Mussolini, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne and the television production of Suddenly Last Summer. Her roles in Shakespearean and classic fare include the film versions of Richard III, Othello, for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, A Private Function and the television production of David Copperfield. She played the role of Headmistress Minerva McGonagall in the phenomenally popular Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, a role she will reprise in the next installment of the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, later this year.

In 1989, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the title of Dame on Smith as a token of appreciation and respect for her prodigious dramatic accomplishments.
