After three years working as a journalist, STEPHEN DILLANE (Merlin) auditioned for the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He combined regular work in repertory theatre with TV performances in Dennis Potter's "Christabel” and David Hare's "Heading Home” before going to the National Theatre for "The Beaux Stratagem,” "Dancing at Lughnasa” and "Angels in America.” He played Horatio in Zeffirelli's film of "Hamlet,” then played Hamlet himself in Peter Hall's stage production at the Gielgud Theatre.

"Endgame” and "Uncle Vanya” followed on the London stage. His feature film work includes "The Hours” (as Leonard Woolf), "Welcome to Sarajevo,” "The Darkest Light,” and "Spy Game.” In 2000, he returned to the stage in Tom Stoppard's "The Real Thing,” which transferred to Broadway, where he won the Tony Award for Best Actor. He worked with Stoppard again playing Alexander Herzen in the National Theatre production of "Coast of Utopia.”
