JILL CULTON (Director/Screen Story by), who is considered one of the most
talented animators and storytellers of her generation, makes her directorial debut
with Open Season, in which she brings the characters of Boog, Elliot and all of
Timberline to life.
After spending nearly eight years honing her craft at Pixar Animation Studios,
Culton has brought her experience and knowledge as an animation director,
conceptual artist and storyteller to Sony Pictures Animation.
While working on Monsters, Inc., Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life and Toy Story at
Pixar, Culton mastered the art of blending a comedic, powerful story with an
endearing ensemble of appealing characters.
Culton served as a storyboard artist on A Bug's Life and on both Toy Story films.
As a character designer on Toy Story 2, she is credited with bringing to life the
heart and soul of that film, the character of Jessie. Subsequently, Culton served
as a conceptual artist and head of story development on Monsters, Inc., and is
part of the select team that is credited with the original story on the film.
Just prior to joining Sony Pictures Animation, Culton spent time at ILM, helping to
set up that company's feature film unit.
An avid nature lover, Culton drew on the work of legendary artist Eyvind Earle for
Open Season's unique production design, in which strong lines and dramatic
sources of light give way to peaceful backgrounds.
Culton studied at the California Institute of the Arts, where she was one of only
five women in the character animation class of 1990.
