SALIM AKIL (Director, Co-Producer) After just a decade in the entertainment industry, writer, director and producer Salim Akil has already established himself in both the television and film worlds. His directing credits include eleven episodes of the CW Network's long-running series "Girlfriends," including the 2006 two-part season finale, as well as ten episodes of "The Game,” the CW comedy series about the wives and girlfriends of professional football players. Akil co-wrote and directed "The Game” season finale with his wife, Mara Brock Akil.

Akil jump started his entertainment career with the 1998 independent feature film Drylongso, which he co-wrote and co-produced with Cauleen Smith on a budget of just $25,000. The film, which focuses on a girl who sets out with a Polaroid camera to document the lives of young black men, was featured in the 1999 Sundance and Berlin film festivals and won the Grand Jury Prize at the Urbanworld Film Festival.

That early success led to Showtime Networks optioning Akil's original script Undertow, a series centered on a schizophrenic detective. Akil soon joined the writing staff of the network's hit series "Soul Food” and within four years worked his way up to story editor, director and, finally, executive producer.

Born in Oakland, Akil was raised in nearby Richmond, California. He attended Columbia College in Los Angeles, where he studied film and television production. Before entering the entertainment business, Akil provided counseling for people suffering from schizophrenia and bipolar disease at an outpatient clinic. Previously, he spent five years working in a mortuary.

Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil together founded the production company Akil Productions, where they are developing several feature films including Come Sunday and Rendezvous Eighteenth, based Jake Lamar's popular novel. He will continue directing upcoming episodes of "The Game”, which has been picked up by BET.
