MATTHIAS SCHOENAERTS is a Flemish actor who started to act on stage when he was a child playing opposite his father Julien Schoenaerts in The Little Prince. And at 15, he made his screen debut in the Oscar-nominated Daens (Stijn Coninx).

In 2002, after finishing the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in Antwerp, he has performed in a number of stage productions and has starred also a number of award-winning shorts and feature movies such as Loft (Eric Van Looy), Any Way The Wind Blows (Tom Barman) and My Queen Karo (Dorothee Van Den Berghe). A supporting role in director Paul Verhoeven's Black Book (2006) introduced him to a wider European cinema.

But his acclaimed lead performance in director Michael Roskam's Bullhead (Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film, 2012) brought him international renown. He won, among a dozen of other international prizes for his performance, the FIPRESCI Award for Best Actor at Palm Springs International Film Festival, the Award of Best Actor at Austin Fantastic Fest and The Acting Award Prize at the AFI.

He was seen alongside Marion Cotillard in Rust and Bone, directed by Jacques Audiard, which debuted at Cannes in May 2012. Again, he was seen alongside Marion in Blood Ties, directed by Guillaume Canet, which debuted at Cannes in May 2013.

In 2013, Matthias was in be seen in both Loft, directed by Eric Van Looy, teaming up with Michael Roskam again in Animal Rescue (co-starring Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace) and then contributing lead performances to three films: A Little Chaos directed by Alan Rickman (co-starring Kate Winslet), Suite Francaise directed by Saul Dibb (co-starring Michelle Williams and Kristin Scott-Thomas) and Far From The Madding Crowd directed by Thomas Vinterberg (co-starring Carey Mulligan).
