Fassbender's performance as Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen's Hunger won critical acclaim and, following the film's Caméra d'Or win at Cannes in 2008, Fassbender scooped up numerous international awards for best actor, including the British Independent Film Award (BIFA), the Irish Film & Television Award (IFTA), the London Film Critics' Circle Award, and awards at the 2008 Stockholm Film Festival and the Chicago International Film Festival. Fassbender was honored at the latter festival the following year as best supporting actor for his performance in Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank. Fassbender's performance in Fish Tank also brought him BIFA and IFTA nominations, as well as his second London Film Critics' Award.

Fassbender has seen critical and commercial success as Magneto in the X-Men franchise (X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past and the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse); as David in Ridley Scott's Prometheus; and as Carl Jung in David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method.

In 2014, Fassbender was nominated for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award, for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Edwin Epps in 12 Years a Slave. 12 Years a Slave marked Fassbender's third collaboration with McQueen, following his role in 2012's Shame, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.

Fassbender's other film credits include Inglourious Basterds, Jane Eyre, Haywire, The Counselor and Frank.

Fassbender was recently seen in Slow West, which opened to critical acclaim in April, and will star in the title role in Macbeth, which opens in the U.S. in December. He is currently shooting Assassin's Creed, which he is producing through his production company DMC Film Limited with Ubisoft and New Regency, set for a December 2016 release.
