The cruelty of slavery is presented in extremely graphic terms.
PROFANITY: (View Profanity)
God's name is spoken in vain 4 times. There are 8 other profanities spoken.
SEX & NUDITY:
There are two discreet sex scenes (nothing is shown). A quick shot of a man's buttocks. There is one scene of sexual violence in which men are depicted forcibly sucking a woman's breasts and possibly raping her. There are lengthy (several seconds in length) views of full frontal female nudity in a non-sexual context.
Sexual violence (see sex/nudity). A scene in which a dog's eye is being placed back in its socket. A scene in which a slave receives a vicious beating. Images of cruelty to slaves. Hangings. Childbirth. Bloody, torn-up feet. A child is brutally murdered (the murder is not shown, but the aftermath is).
DRUGS & ALCOHOL:
An occasional amusing comment is used as a means of comic relief. Beloved is definitely not a comedy.
TONE OF MOVIE:
Beloved is a grim movie, only occasionally lightened by brief moments of comedy. It's also a ghost story, but the truly horrific element of the film comes through its depiction of slavery.
A dog's eye is shown dangling from its socket. A child's bloody body is depicted.
