One character has a severely scarred face as a result of child abuse. The film deals frankly with child abuse and this may disturb some younger viewers.
PROFANITY: (View Profanity)
The S-word is spoken 22 times. God's name is spoken in vain 3 times. There are 34 other profanities spoken.
SEX & NUDITY:
The film contains one non-graphic sex scene. Two characters are shown in bed, but the camera remains on their faces and the scene cuts away discreetly when the act begins. No nudity. There is one short scene of women dancing erotically at a club. Only cleavage is shown.
There are several references to past child and/or spousal abuse. In one scene, a mother strikes her child. There are also scenes which depict an adult threatening a child. Bullies at school are shown to be intimidating fellow students -- this leads to a fight and a knifing.
DRUGS & ALCOHOL:
At least three characters in this film are alcoholics; consequently, there is frequent and excessive consumption of alcohol. One character is a drug addict/drunk.
Minimal. There are occasionally humorous lines of dialogue designed to diffuse tension, but the overall tone of the film is serious, not comedic.
TONE OF MOVIE:
Optimistic drama with elements of tragedy.
The only special effects are the makeup on Kevin Spacey's face, which effectively suggest severe burn scarring.
