Porter is a man that is double crossed and left for dead but he soon resurfaces. He wants his cut and doesn't care what he has to do to get it. Now, everyone in the city's criminal underworld, including an air-tight syndicate called The Outfit, have Porter's cross-hairs trained on them.

Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Action - Payback is a violent action thriller with some comedy. Fans of Mel Gibson will be the primary audience, as he plays a brutal, slightly crazed character similar to the original Lethal Weapon. Fans of action-crime films will probably also enjoy the extreme steps taken by characters in the film to get what they want. The multiple scenes of extreme violence, torture and other brutality, however, may be too much for some viewers sensitive to such material.

Critic's Review Heading
Above Average
"Get ready to root for the bad guy" trumpets the tag line for PAYBACK, and you will thanks to Mel Gibson's unique anti-hero persona. He stars as a thief out for revenge on the partner who ripped him off, bringing his combination of instability and wounded appeal to the role. The action is violent -- at times to extremes -- but somehow it only rarely feels desperate or exploitative. It's a dark film about dark characters which still entertains in spite of the occasionally grim tone. Credit Gibson with creating a psycho you can snuggle up to.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

The heist goes smoothly enough. The cash is already hot. So when Porter (Mel Gibson) and Vat (Gregg Henry) steal it, they're in the clear.

Time comes around to split the take and Val makes three grave mistakes: he takes Porter's cut; he takes Porter's wife and tries to take Porter's life. Problem is, when you kill this guy, you better make sure he's dear.

Porter soon resurfaces, reborn with a serious case of tunnel-vision. He wants his cut and doesn't care what he has to do to get it. Now, everyone in the city's criminal underworld, including an air-tight syndicate called The Outfit, have Porter's cross-hair trained on them.
