Drama - October Sky is a fact-based drama with elements of family conflict, triumph over adversity and historical context. Older viewers who enjoy uplifting stories with minimal objectionable content will appreciate the film most. Younger viewers may find the story too slow or lacking in excitement. The focus on character interaction, particularly a father-son relationship, makes this film a solid choice for viewers who want intelligent, character-based stories which also have positive messages.

Critic's Review Heading
Good
It might be hard to get people to look at October Sky clearly. More cynical viewers will be scared off by the "inspirational" marketing campaign, and feel-good viewers may only care if it makes them feel good. This, however, is a film that works by avoiding most of the traps of triumph-over-adversity dramas. Some of the elements may be typical, but the execution is not -- October Sky delivers well-developed relationships, solid performances, and yes, even a crowd-pleasing finish. It's the unconventional appeal of its approach to a conventional type of story that's so satisfying. This is a feel-good film that isn't also a feel-dumb film.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

In Coalwood, West Virginia, all the boys grow up to be coal miners and Homer Hickam (Jake Gyllenhaal) has no reason to think he'll be any different. Too small to earn a football scholarship, Homer has no way out of his predetermined life -- until the soviet satellite Sputnik flies over the October sky and changes everything. It's 1957 and Homer's world just got a lot bigger.

Though his father is mine superintendent and has no greater wish than to see his sons follow in his footsteps, Homer embarks on a mission to build and launch his own homemade rockets with the help of his loyal band of friends. Though their frequent mistakes nearly get them shut down, their successes inspire the whole town to believe that miracles can happen even in Coalwood, and there's nothing wrong with shooting for the stars.

Based on the autobiography of former NASA science engineer Homer Hickam, Jr. about four boys who embody the hope of a community
