Notes:
To save a nation, the Musketeers must reunite and embark on their
most dangerous mission ever: to free the prisoner in an iron mask
and unlock the secret of his identity. Only through this act of
mercy will they realize their dream of finding and serving one
great king -- for the enigmatic prisoner, for the kingdom that
was and will be again, and for each other. One for all, all for
one.
Adventure - The Man in the Iron Mask reaches out to two distinct sets of viewers:
teen girls enamored of star Leonardo DiCaprio, and fans of the adventurous
stories of the Three Musketeers. The former will be perfectly satisfied
with the appearance of their heartthrob in two leading roles, while the latter
will find a terribly lackluster and sluggish story. The exceptional cast
mostly waits around for a chance to do something, and never gets much of a chance.
Nice to look at in terms of production values and the attractive star, but too
slow to work as a mainstream action film and too unfocused to work as a drama.
PROFANITY: Moderately strong and infrequent SEX/NUDITY: Sexual noises, situations; brief male bare buttocks VIOLENCE: Several stabbings and deaths during swordplay; beatings DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Consumption of wine, occasionally to excess ACTION: Sword and gunplay, fistfights COMEDY: Comic action, clownish behavior
THE MAN
IN THE IRON MASK is a big muddled mess of an adventure yarn, satisfying
only for those interested in going to watch DiCaprio in regal finery
looking his prettiest. Others will find a waste of stellar cast and
classic story which never gets a handle on what the film should have been
about for the average viewer: a chance to cheer for the crossed swords of
re-born legends just a bit earlier than 100 minutes after the lights go
down.

The positive and negative comments made by moviegoers are very

It has been many years since Aramis, Athos, Porthos and d'Artagnan
fought together as the bravest and best of the King's Royal Guards,
the Musketeers, with a passion and valor that has become legend.
Athos (John Malkovich) lives a simple life raising his son Raoul.
Porthos (Gérard Depardieu), though thicker and older, still
eats lustily of life, though he misses the great battles of the
past. Aramis (Jeremy Irons) has followed his faith and become
a priest. Only d'Artagnan still serves the King as Captain of
the Musketeers.
It is 1660 and France is starving. Louis XIII, the great King
whose throne the Musketeers served has died and been succeeded
by his arrogant and cruel heir, King Louis XIV (Leonardo DiCaprio)
... while at the Bastille a mysterious prisoner has lived for
nearly a decade encased in an iron mask.
To save a nation, the Musketeers must reunite and embark on their

secret of his identity. Only through this act of mercy will they
