Storyline Heading

A quartet of hit men ingeniously battle through a phalanx of bodyguards to "off" a venal white slaver. Most of the lethal effort expended and absolutely all the risks taken are done so by Mel, an extraordinarily sympathetic hired killer. A magnificent murder machine, his only vulnerability is his need to be liked by everyone. This leads to his being ripped off by cohorts and girlfriends alike. When the four foolish guns-for-hire freelance kidnap a beautiful teenage Japanese heiress with connections to the Mob, they have committed one crime too many. The hit now is out on them, but no one counts on the girl falling for Mel.

Critic's Review Heading
Above Average
The Big Hit is an easy-going mix of slam-bang action and quirky, often goofy humor, capably directed by Hong Kong director Che-Kirk Wong. Unfortunately, while the high-octane action delivers, aside from some clever, self-mocking gags, most of the humor wears thin. As such, the film, while not a big miss, does not quite live up to its title.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

THE BIG HIT follows the professional and romantic misadventures of Mel (Mark Wahlberg), a beleaguered hitman who is drawn, along with his professional associates, Cisco (Lou Diamond Phillips), Crunch (Bokeem Woodbine), Vince (Antonio Sabato, Jr.) and Gump (Robin Dunne), into a moonlighting gig that turns sour.

What seemed like a quick and easy weekend kidnap job backfires when their victim, a rich industrialist's daughter named Keiko (China Chow), turns out to be the godchild of their boss, Paris (Avery Brooks). When Cisco, the mastermind of the plan, betrays Paris, Mel becomes a wanted man.

Meanwhile, as if his weekend wasn't going badly enough, Mel's mistress, Chantel (Lela Rochon), absconds with his earnings just as his fiancée Pam's (Christina Applegate) disapproving parents (Elliott Gould and Lainie Kazan) arrive for a visit. As his professional and domestic woes collide, Mel finds himself dodging bullets while trying to impress his potential in-laws. Throw in an overzealous video store clerk demanding the return of an overdue tape, and it's not long before Mel's carefully constructed life starts to unravel.
