Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Romantic Drama - The Horse Whisperer is a romantic drama with some wonderful scenery. Viewers may be most likely to enjoy it if they enjoyed films like The Bridges of Madison County or Out of Africa. Story, character development and acting are also quite strong. The long running time (over two and a half hours) may feel excessive to some viewers. Though the content is generally acceptable for pre- teenagers, children will probably find it either too slow or (at times) too scary and intense.

Critic's Review Heading
Very Good
Robert Redford's THE HORSE WHISPERER is unquestionably the most visually stunning American film of 1998.  With so much mesmerizing beauty in Redford's direction, you would expect THE HORSE WHISPERER to be a hands-down contender for best film of the year.  And I'm sure it will show up on plenty such lists, evidence of the way its images will sear their way into your consciousness.  Yet there's an intangible something missing from THE HORSE WHISPERER, something which keeps it from making the leap from very good film to modern classic.

I left the theater dazzled, but not emotionally drained.  THE HORSE WHISPERER is a spectacular piece of film-making just one re-write removed from greatness.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

14-year-old Grace MacLean (Scarlett Johansson) is emotionally and physically scarred after suffering a terrible riding accident while astride her prized horse, Pilgrim.

Realizing that the fates of her daughter and the horse are inextricably linked, Grace's mother, Annie (Kristin Scott Thomas), a high-powered magazine editor, launches an all-out campaign to find a "horse whisperer," someone with a unique gift for curing troubled horses. She learns of Tom Booker (Robert Redford), a legend for this sort of work, and packs up both Grace and Pilgrim to seek his help in Montana.

While Tom works to rebuild all the lives that have been shattered by the accident, love blossoms between the gentle horseman and the uprooted sophisticate -- a love with both wonderful and tragic consequences.
