Comedy - A biting political satire overlaid on a less-ambitious comedy plotline involving car chases and assassination attempts. The lampooing of politics keeps this film consistently freshy, edgy, and funny.

Critic's Review Heading
Very Good
Bulworth is an angry movie, but director Warren Beatty is savvy enough to recognize that people respond better to comedies than serious "issue films," so he has camouflaged his message beneath the surface of this original, incisive satire. Like Wag the Dog and Primary Colors, Bulworth may not have widespread mainstream appeal, but anyone with an interest in American politics should see this movie, not only because it promises to tickle the funny bone, but because so many of its shots hit the bulls-eye. It's worth noting that Bulworth is occasionally reminiscent of Network, Sidney Lumet's 1976 shredding of the TV news industry, both in terms of plot points and spirit. Each movie has a take-no-prisoners attitude, and in today's climate of suffocating political correctness, that's a welcome trait.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

In the waning days of the California primary election campaign of 1996, President Bill Clinton has run unopposed in the Democratic Party, and Bob Dole has already secured the Republican nomination. Incumbent United States Senator Jay Bulworth is holding off a challenger.

He hasn't eaten or slept in several days.

In the midst of a nervous breakdown, Bulworth arranges his own suicide by hiring a hit man to assassinate him during the final campaign weekend after making a deal with a corrupt lobbyist for a lot of life insurance to benefit his daughter.

But Bulworth's selfplanned assassination yields two unexpected dividends: the freedom to speak honestly and a meeting with Nina, a beautiful, intelligent African-American woman who has been raised by 60's activists. With new enthusiasm to live, Bulworth must now somehow stop the "hit" he has put out on himself...
