Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Drama - Instinct is more a psychological drama than a thriller, despite previews that suggest the contrary. There is very little action, and what action there is mostly occurs in flashback late in the film. Fans of Anthony Hopkins will probably enjoy his performance, though it's very similar to his work in The Silence of the Lambs. It could also be appealing to those sympathetic with its anti-civilization philosophizing. Many others will find it too slow, with many similarities to scenes and situations from other films.

Critic's Review Heading
Below Average
Instinct isn't a case of Anthony Hopkins recycling Hannibal Lecter, preparing for the upcoming Silence of the Lambs sequel; he's just keeping pace with a story that slaps together characters, situations and exact shots from dozens of other films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Gorillas in the Mist, The Shawshank Redemption, etc. It's an uninspired, cliche-ridden film, yet somehow Hopkins manages to pull a solid performance out of a familiar role. His gloss on cinema's best known cannibal is the best thing about a film that does plenty of cannibalizing of its own.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

Within the brilliant mind of primatologist Ethan Powell (Academy Award-winner ANTHONY HOPKINS) lies an ominous secret-a deep-seated mystery unsolved by his estranged family and the law enforcement officials who have tracked him down and jailed him for murders that occurred in the jungles of Rwanda. Highly educated and sophisticated, Powell's truth was derived from years of studying mountain gorillas-to the point where he was living among them in the wild, and accepted as one of their own.

Now, held captive in a brutal prison for the criminally insane, Powell, who has not spoken in years, is remanded to psychiatrist Theo Caulder (Academy Award-winner CUBA GOODING, JR.). Caulder's unbridled ambition drives him to risk everything and put his life on the line in order to understand the actions of this headline-gripping madman. Eventually, both men embark on an extraordinary journey fueled by their insatiable hunger for the truth, regardless of the cost.
