Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Romantic Comedy - An Ideal Husband is a low-key comedy based on a play by Oscar Wilde. Fans of the author will probably enjoy the droll, witty humor and low-key characterizations. Other viewers may find the film far too slow, or consider the treatment of the story too serious considering Wilde's frivolous dialogue. The entertaining performances by Rupert Everett, Minnie Driver and Jeremy Northam will probably be the strongest attraction for viewers.

Critic's Review Heading
Above Average
AN IDEAL HUSBAND is so determinedly droll that it's likely to leave your cheeks aching from a sustained 96 minute smirk, which shouldn't be a shock considering it's an Oscar Wilde story. This tale of romantic deception and political intrigue is fairly mild stuff, hampered somewhat by too "heavy" a reading of the characters' relationships. Fortunately there's still plenty of juicy Wilde-ian dialogue to go around. A little droll can go an awfully long way, but AN IDEAL HUSBAND delivers enough smiles to entertain. It's the work of a writer who preferred his comedy on wry.

A brilliant politician and a perfect gentleman, he is the ideal husband for the captivating Lady Chiltern (Cate Blanchett). Admired by all, they present a picture of wedded harmony until the scheming adventuress Mrs. Cheveley (Julianne Moore) threatens to reveal a dark secret from his past and the very foundations of Sir Robert's career and marriage look set to crumble. Cornered, he turns to Arthur. <BR> <P> Lord Goring soon finds himself caught up in a tangled web of lies, temptations, and trysts. While he excels at manipulating the affairs of others, his own prove infinitely more challenging. The persistent charms of Sir Robert's sister (Minnie Driver) and the constant badgering of his own father (John Wood) pose a significant threat to Arthur's blissful bachelorhood.<BR> <P> Ironically, Lord Goring's involvement in these ploys of deception and dishonesty force him to come to terms with the truth about love and forgiveness. Perhaps, one day even he can become and "ideal husband." </??????????????? </font></td></tr> <tr><td><center> <a href="#storyline"><font color="#0000FF" size="3">Back to Storyline</font></a></center></td></tr> </table></div> </font> <p align="center"><small>(Use "BACK" On Your Browser To Return To Previous Pages)</small><font size="3"><br> </font><font size="2">|<font color="#0000FF"><a href="home.asp">Home</a></font>|<font color="#0000FF"><a href="themain.asp">Theaters</a></font>|<font color="#0000FF"><a href="vidmain.asp">Video</a></font>|<a href="tvmain.asp">TV</a>|</font></p> <p align="center"><font size="2">Your Comments and Suggestions are Always Welcome.<br> <a href="http://www.CinemaReview.com/contact.html" target="_blank">Contact CinemaReview.com</a>  </font></p> <a href="http://instantkeys.net/" title="InstantKeys – Your #1 source to global news!" style="display:none">InstantKeys – Your #1 source to global news!</a> <p align="center"><font size="2">Images and Storyline(s) ©Miramax Pictures Inc.®,  All Rights Reserved.<br> Movie Type, Review and Opinions © Cinema Review<br>   All Rights Reserved.</font></p> <center> <a name="#search"></a> <form action="search.asp" name="sform"> <input type="hidden" name="CombineSearch" value="1"> <font size="4">Find: </font><select name="find" size="1"> <option value="title" SELECTED>Movie Title</option> <option value="cast">Cast/Crew</option> </select> <select name="type" size="1"> <option value="all" SELECTED>All Movies</option> <option value="theaters">At Theaters</option> <option value="videos">On Video</option> </select> <SELECT NAME="view"> <Option Value="Details" SELECTED>Details <Option Value="Summary">Summary <Option Value="Titles Only">Titles Only </SELECT><input maxlength="256" name="title" size="9" value="" type="text"><input type="submit" value="GO!" name="B1"> <font size="1"><a href="help_quick_search.htm"><b>HELP!</b></a></font> </form> <td width="160" valign="top"><script type="text/javascript"><!-- google_ad_client = "pub-8785903257035128"; google_ad_width = 160; google_ad_height = 600; google_ad_format = "160x600_as"; google_ad_type = "text_image"; google_ad_channel = ""; //--> </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"> </script> <p><!-- Search Google --> <center> <form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/custom" target="google_window"> <table bgcolor="#cccccc"> <tr><td nowrap="nowrap" valign="top" align="left" height="32"> <a href="http://www.google.com/"> <img src="http://www.google.com/logos/Logo_25gry.gif" border="0" alt="Google" align="middle"></img></a> <br/> <input type="text" name="q" size="21" maxlength="255" value=""></input> </td></tr> <tr><td valign="top" align="left"> <input type="submit" name="sa" value="Search"></input> <input type="hidden" name="client" value="pub-8785903257035128"></input> <input type="hidden" name="forid" value="1"></input> <input type="hidden" name="ie" value="ISO-8859-1"></input> <input type="hidden" name="oe" value="ISO-8859-1"></input> <input type="hidden" name="safe" value="active"></input> <input type="hidden" name="cof" value="GALT:#008000;GL:1;DIV:#336699;VLC:663399;AH:center;BGC:FFFFFF;LBGC: 336699;ALC:0000FF;LC:0000FF;T:000000;GFNT:0000FF;GIMP:0000FF;FORID:1;"></i nput> <input type="hidden" name="hl" value="en"></input> </td></tr></table> </form> </center> <!-- Search Google --> <script type="text/javascript"><!-- google_ad_client = "pub-8785903257035128"; google_ad_width = 160; google_ad_height = 600; google_ad_format = "160x600_as"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_ad_channel ="6734356104"; google_color_border = "FF4500"; google_color_bg = "FFEBCD"; google_color_link = "DE7008"; google_color_url = "E0AD12"; google_color_text = "8B4513"; //--></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"> </script> <P><p></td> </table> <center><!-- Search Google --> <center> <form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/custom" target="google_window"> <table bgcolor="#000000"> <tr><td nowrap="nowrap" valign="top" align="left" height="32"> <a href="http://www.google.com/"> <img src="http://www.google.com/logos/Logo_25blk.gif" border="0" alt="Google" align="middle"></img></a> <input type="text" name="q" size="16" maxlength="255" value=""></input> <input type="submit" name="sa" value="Search"></input> <input type="hidden" name="client" value="pub-8785903257035128"></input> <input type="hidden" name="forid" value="1"></input> <input type="hidden" name="ie" value="ISO-8859-1"></input> <input type="hidden" name="oe" value="ISO-8859-1"></input> <input type="hidden" name="cof" value="GALT:#008000;GL:1;DIV:#336699;VLC:663399;AH:center;BGC:FFFFFF;LBGC:336699;ALC:0000FF;LC:0000FF;T:000000;GFNT:0000FF;GIMP:0000FF;FORID:1;"></input> <input type="hidden" name="hl" value="en"></input> </td></tr></table> </form> </center> <!-- Search Google --> </center> </table> </body> </html>
