Harry S. Stamper, whose expertise as the world's foremost deep
core oil driller is the only hope for Earth to survive an oncoming
asteroid that will annihilate all life on the globe unless he
can find a way to blow the mass to kingdom come.
Action Adventure - Armageddon is a fairly effective summer action blockbuster from
the director of Bad Boys and The Rock. Viewers who enjoyed
those films, with plenty of explosions and rapid-edit action, will
certainly enjoy this film. The comic lines are generally entertaining,
and the special effects of a very high quality. Character development
and story, however, are predictably insignificant.
PROFANITY: Fairly frequent and moderately strong SEX/NUDITY: No explicit nudity or sexual content VIOLENCE: No explicit violence; scenes of fights between characters; scenes of characters dying in disasters. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Two scenes of alcohol consumption in bars ACTION: Frequent scenes of destruction, natural disasters COMEDY: Lots of one-line quips about extreme situations
With uncommon candor, publicity materials for Armageddon make
it known that a "cadre of talented writers" worked on the script. It's
clear that the film-makers have embraced the concept of pot-luck
screenwriting for big budget films, the idea that if everyone brings
something different to the table, you'll end up with a cinematic meal.
Armageddon is more like a massive snack, an exciting diversion
with solid action and some big laughs. From a narrative standpoint,
on the other hand, there's nothing cohesive or compelling; strangely
enough, it feels like the result of a dozen different writers contributing
individual scenes or lines of dialogue.
An asteroid the size of Texas is heading directly toward Earth
at 22,000 mph. NASA's executive director, Dan Truman, has only
one option--to send up a crew to destroy the asteroid. He enlists
the help of Harry S. Stamper, the world's foremost deep core oil
driller, and Stamper's roughneck team of drillers to land on the
asteroid, drill into its surface, and drop a nuclear device into
the core. On this heroic journey, they face the most physically
and emotionally challenging conditions ever encountered ... to
save the world and prevent ARMAGEDDON.
