Drama - Rounders is a drama set in the world of high-stakes poker,
including underworld gambling figures. The film will probably be most
interesting to those who like other behind-the-scenes type crime dramas
like GoodFellas. Fans of stars Matt Damon and Edward Norton
will probably also enjoy their performances. The film is probably not
for those who like more light-hearted fare, since the tone is very
somber and the use of profanity is very prevalent.
PROFANITY: Strong and extremely frequent SEX/NUDITY: Brief view of bare breasts, suggestion of oral sex VIOLENCE: One scene of a severe beating DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Several scenes of characters drinking alcohol ACTION: Brief fight scene COMEDY: None
At its most compelling, Rounders offers a fascinating glimpse
inside the world of high-stakes poker, with Matt Damon playing tour
guide as a law student pulled back into the game by an old gambling
buddy (Edward Norton, full of can't-help-myself sleaze). The film
becomes a compelling sociology lesson showing us the tricks and skills
of the great players, as well as the ways Damon's character learns to
accept his own talent. Distracting sub-plots interfere a bit too often,
throwing vaguely-defined relationships in the way of the story, but
Rounders generally succeeds at bringing us to the back alley
card rooms and casino tables where card-players become tortured artists.

Mike McDermott, a master card player who trades the poker-playing
rounds for law school and a shot at a new life with his girlfriend
Jo. For Mike, the new life he's staking out seems like a legitimate
road to success, but it's short on the thrills and excitement
of back room poker games. But when Mike's long time friend Worm
is released from prison, Mike is faced with the high-stakes dilemma
of his life: to keep on the straight and narrow, or deal himself
back into the world of the rounders.
