Fans of horror films will probably be extremely satisfied with the film's pacing, inventive special effects, and strange sense of humor. Critic's Review Heading
Above Average
John Carpenter's Vampires is the kind of slick horror package that's increasingly hard to find: raucous, sanguine, and almost utterly devoid of sub-text. The story of a veteran vampire hunter (James Woods) searching for the "original vampire" makes for fine gruesome entertainment, but it should have been better. Carpenter brings his wry sense of humor to the film's most horrific moments, and offers promise of a minor classic with the energetic opening 25 minutes. Too bad it gets much more mean-spirited and potentially offensive than it needs to be. For a vampire movie without a "message," it offers some mixed messages it could do without.
