Thriller - A dumb horror film about a town terrorized by killer bats. Not campy enough for those who enjoy silly horror films, and there aren't enough genuine scares for those in search of serious chills.

Critic's Review Heading
Very Poor
Bats is not the first motion picture to exploit a human psychological weakness, nor will it be the last, but it is one of the least successful. About the only thing the movie has going for it is the release date: a certain percentage of the population, craving a theatrical Halloween movie, will probably see the film out of sheer desperation. And the PG-13 rating helps to widen the potential audience. (Then again, who really wants to see a PG-13 horror flick?) Ultimately, the real problem with Bats is that it isn't scary or creepy, and there aren't enough unintentional laughs to justify sitting through all 90 minutes.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
When the small Texas town of Gallup experiences a series of inexplicable bat attacks on local residents, the government calls upon eminent wildlife zoologist Dr. Sheila Casper (Dina Meyer) to investigate. Although usually a harmless and rather gentle animal, swarms of bats have suddenly become vicious, making Gallup a very dangerous place after the sun goes down. Sheila teams up with town sheriff Emmett Kimsey (Lou Diamond Phillips) to discover why these nocturnal mammals have changed their behavior. As the attacks escalate, Sheila and Kimsey must locate and destroy the swarm's cave before the killing spreads.
