Action Thriller - Enemy of the State is a conspiracy action/thriller from the director of Crimson Tide and Top Gun. Action fans will certainly enjoy the fast pace and complicated technical gadgetry involved in the story. Fans of Will Smith will also enjoy his smart performance as the film's protagonist. The story is more solid than most in the genre, which combined with Smith's presence could mean appeal beyond the typical male action fan base. Drags on a bit too long, but better than most typical action films.

Critic's Review Heading
Above Average
Enemy of the State, a generally effective conspiracy thriller from director Tony Scott (Crimson Tide) sometimes feels like it's turning into a documentary on electronic surveillance. The premise -- an ordinary guy becomes the subject of 24-hour observation when he learns too much about a shadow government plot -- is great stuff for an angst-filled Information Age, with Will Smith providing an appealing protagonist. The one major hindrance is Scott's insistence upon fetishizing all the technology used to keep tabs on Smith. At times when the gadgetry should be scary, it looks cool. Though Smith's performance and the solid pacing make the film entertaining, the concept isn't nearly as edgy as it could be when it looks like a commercial for Radio Shack.
