Critic's Review Heading
Average
Simpatico is basically a multiple character study with a heavy element of mystery thrown in for good measure. It's not really a thriller, at least not in the traditional sense, because very little happens during the course of the movie's 1:46 running time, and there's rarely more than a minimal sense of suspense or tension. Instead, the film is much more an examination of the way in which a series of events in the past have been magnified, not erased, by the passage of years, and how the consequences have inextricably bound together four lives in a twisted web of lies, guilt, and regret. Simpatico possesses a great cast - Nick Nolte, Jeff Bridges, Albert Finney, Catherine Keener, and Sharon Stone - but there's a sense that these actors are spinning their wheels in a story that should have been more compelling. The problem resides in the writing, and results in poor character motivation and a lack of internal logic.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
At first glance, Lyle Carter seems to have it all. A handsome millionaire with a beautiful wife and a sprawling estate in Lexington, Kentucky, Carter has built his empire on breeding and training thoroughbreds. He is in the process of selling Simpatico, a Triple Crown winner, when the story begins.

Then Carter receives a collect call from Vinnie, and a dark event from the past threatens to destroy his current success. Once a good friend of Carter's, Vinnie is now a deluded barfly living in a small town in California. He has gotten himself into trouble and calls Carter to bail him out before the truth about their past - their involvement in a horseracing scam which resulted in the ruin of an innocent man - comes to light.

When Carter arrives in California, he finds Vinnie a destitute man yearning for redemption. Vinnie has tricked Carter into coming back and confronting the past. After years of struggling with guilt, Vinnie wants to come clean. He believes he has located Simms, the man whose life they destroyed so many years ago, living in Kentucky under an assumed identity. Vinnie wants to offer restitution, but Carter fears his success will come crashing down if they reveal their secret.

Vinnie runs off with Carter's car, his money and his plane ticket, flying to Kentucky to locate the victim of their scam and Rosie, the woman he once loved. When Carter realizes what Vinnie is up to, he sends quirky, idealistic Cecilia, a friend of Vinnie's, with a bag full of money to keep Simms quiet.

As Vinnie attempts to undo the past, Carter hides out at Vinnie's place. Surrounded by relics of their history, Carter is reminded of their past friendship and their old dreams. He quickly unravels into a man, like Vinnie, clinging to the past. As the events unfold, Carter's success and Simms' complacency, it turns out, have more in common than Vinnie had realized. The truth finally surfaces, and Carter's latest scam is revealed with tragic results.
