Critic's Review Heading
Good
The big challenge faced by hot Hong Kong talent looking to make the transition to mainstream American stardom is to expand their audience without watering down the special qualities that earned them cult U.S. followings to begin with. More often than not, it's a losing battle--witness director John Woo's lacking initial stateside efforts, Tomorrow Never Dies' fleeting taste of Michelle Yeoh's considerable capabilities, and the disappointing Jackie Chan lite on display in Rush Hour. Against all odds and expectations, however, martial artist extraordinaire Jet Li has managed to buck that dismaying trend, first with his movie-stealing villain turn in Lethal Weapon 4 and now his first U.S. starring vehicle, the satisfying actioner Romeo Must Die.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
Han Sing (Li) and Trish O'Day (Aaliyah) come from different sides of the world but their paths cross in Oakland, California because they have a lot in common.

Han has just arrived from Hong Kong, where his loyalty to his father Chu, an American crime lord, cost him his career in the Hong Kong Police and landed him in jail. Now Han's brother Po is dead, the victim of a brutal war between Chu's Asian crime family and an equally powerful African-American gang. Han, compelled to avenge his brother, comes to a new world armed only with his mental discipline and martial arts skill.

But when he arrives and immerses himself in the seedy underbelly of Oakland's waterfront, Han finds that crime lord Isaac ODay is a formidable opponent. Yet, Han receives unexpected help — and underststanding — from O'Day's own beautiful and rebellious daughter, Trish.

Like Han, Trish loses the brother she loves to the crime war. For Trish, the final struggle is not about revenge: it is about making the terror end before everyone she cares for is dead.

As Han and Trish try to stop the trail of violence and fear cutting through Oakland, they face a series of threats from the enforcers who guard both their families. Trish battles with her wits to evade the thugs her father assigns to watch over her. Han's battle is more physical, as Isaac O'Day's henchmen try to keep him away from Trish, and faceless figures try to keep him from the truth.
