Critic's Review Heading
Average
Young actress Julia Stiles' latest starring vehicle, Save the Last Dance, continues the pattern that has dogged her career: while the films as a whole do not deliver, Stiles always does. Here, she's not alone, for leading man Sean Patrick Thomas proves to be a match in acting and dance. But with yet another impressive turn to her credit, this is Stiles' show, once again earning her stripes as someone to watch. But until someone puts her in a real movie, it'll be hard to maintain the desire to keep watching.

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

THIS MOVIE IS NOT JUST FOR TEENS!
Nearly all 187 moviegoers enjoyed this movie. Even young adults and adults, including males, rated it only slightly lower than teens. This is a MUST SEE for teens, but adults should also check it out. It would make a great movie to rent for the family to see if you've got teens.

Publisher Comments: (before opinions collected)
An entertaining movie that should appeal to most everyone, especially teenage girls. A word of caution to teenage girls, this movie doesn't contain all that many dancing scenes, especially ballet dancing scenes. It's primarily a romantic drama, which should also appeal to teenage girls. This would make a great date movie! Yes, I would say there's probably enough "guy" type scenes to satisfy your "man." I don't think most men would feel it's a "chick flick."

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

Growing up in a small town in Illinois, Sara loves ballet and dreams of going to Juilliard. When her mother dies in a car crash, however, she abandons her hopes and joins her long-absent father, Roy (Terry Kinney), a musician who lives in Chicago's South Side. There, she begins classes at her new school, an urban campus vastly different, both racially and culturally, from anything she's experienced before.

Still struggling with the loss of her mother, she finds solace when she is befriended by Chenille (Kerry Washington), a black unwed teenage mother whose younger brother is the handsome and gifted Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas). One of school's most popular students and the crown prince of a local hip-hop hangout called the Stepps Club, Derek guides Sara in the culture of hip-hop. And dance leads to romance.

Sara's father, however, can't accept his daughter's relationship with her black classmate, which the school's black women, particularly Nikki (Bianca Lawson), Derek's old flame, also resent. Derek also faces opposition to his new romance, particularly from his boyhood friend, Malakai (Fredro Starr), a violent gangbanger who is afraid he will lose his friendship with Derek. As the school year progresses, the couple finds that their affection and devotion for each other could ultimately threaten Derek's hopes for a better life and Sara's rediscovery of her dreams.
