Notes:
What happens when a person decides that life is merely a state of mind? If you're Betty, a small- town waitress and soap opera fan from Fair Oaks, Kansas, you refuse to believe that you can't be with the love of your life just because he doesn't really exist. After all, life is no excuse for not living.
Romantic Comedy - A fractured fairy tale about hit men and soap operas, Nurse
Betty functions as a comedy with plenty of whimsy and some
twisted-but-hilarious moments.
PROFANITY: Frequent, extreme profanity. SEX/NUDITY: One sex scene without nudity. VIOLENCE: A grisly murder and a shoot-out. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Casual drinking. ACTION: Some, but not high octane. COMEDY: Dark comedy.
During the course of Nurse Betty, title character Betty Sizemore (Renée Zellweger) is once referred to as "Dorothy." This is an entirely appropriate connection, since director Neil LaBute's feature is a modern-day fairy tale about a woman who goes on an improbable, fantastic journey, and finds herself at the end of the yellow brick road. But, because LaBute is far from a conventional filmmaker, Nurse Betty is less like a trip through Oz and more like a view of Alice's Wonderland, but through a glass darkly. Nurse Betty's two hallmarks are originality and star quality, both of which combine to draw the viewer through the film's occasional rough spots. LaBute has put together an offbeat production that combines elements of fantasy, drama, satire, and black humor.

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Moviegoer Opinions:
The moviegoer opinions for Nurse Betty came in a bit higher than I expected. They indicate that moviegoers were not expecting the violence, profanity and dark humor, but for most, the film was funny enough to overcome these negatives. Still, this is a movie only suited for moviegoers who are tolerant of these things.
Cinema Review Opinion: (before moviegoer opinions are collected) CAUTION: This movie is not what it appears to be from the previews!
The previews do not correctly portray this movie. It may appear to be a Romantic Comedy, but be warned. It contains some very violent scenes with some dark humor. Be sure to read the detailed content for more details.
Nurse Betty is a strange, but generally entertaining, movie. It combines romantic comedy with some very violent characters that don't seem to belong in this movie. While these characters add many scenes of dark humor, they also seem to ruin the feel of the movie. I believe the stark contrast between the sweet romantic comedy and the violent dark humor will turn many moviegoers off. If you're into quirky comedies you may enjoy this very strange combination. The critics are giving this movie high marks, so if your taste in movies is similar to that of critics, you may enjoy the movie.

The popular TV daytime drama "A Reason to Love" has an especially devoted viewer in Betty, a young woman with a good heart and a bad marriage. Her no-good car salesman husband, Del (Aaron Eckhart), treats her like dirt and forgets her birthday; as Betty quietly celebrates alone, she can barely remember her deferred dreams of becoming a real nurse.
At home one night watching a videotape of that day's episode, Betty watches raptly as her favorite character, Dr. David Ravell, stares up at the moon and says, "I know there's someone special out there for me." Betty feels as if he's speaking directly to her. That is, until her husband comes home with two men to negotiate a shady business deal. As she tries to watch her show, Betty becomes an accidental witness to this deal going fatally awry: Del offends courtly hit man Charlie (Morgan Freeman) and his excitable
protege Wesley (Chris Rock), and is violently dispatched. Betty, traumatized by this savage event, enters into a fugue state that allows
, even encourages, — her to keep functioning... in a kind of alternate reality. Betty Sizemore becomes "Nurse Betty," who is set on returning to the love of her life, Dr. Ravell, whom she jilted at the altar six years ago.
Betty promptly leaves Kansas in a "borrowed" 1997 Buick LeSabre, which is precisely what her late husband's killers are looking for. They, in turn, set off after Betty, but she has a head start and is intensely focused on her mission. Miles behind their quarry, the hit men formulate wildly differing
assessments of their prey: Wesley sees her as a coldly calculating criminal, while Charlie begins to obsess about her. Back in Fair Oaks, Sheriff Ballard (Pruitt Taylor Vince) and local reporter Roy Ostrey (Crispin Glover) are investigating Del's murder and Betty's sudden, unexplained disappearance.
