Action Adventure - Those looking for thrills and nothing more could be satisfied by this mountain climbing adventure. However, those looking for something more substantial story- or acting-wise should look elsewhere. Violence and language are fairly mild, making the film fairly acceptable for older children.

Critic's Review Heading
Below Average
With its dizzying depictions of courageous derring-do atop rugged mountain peaks and perilously close to steep cliffs, the trailer to Columbia's Vertical Limit has been leaving many a moviegoer breathless... much like the teaser to the same studio's mountain climbing actioner of seven years ago, Cliffhanger. That's where the similarities end. Cliffhanger was by no means a great film, but it was an exciting thrill ride with no pretense whatsoever as to what it is and what it should be. The fact that the stars of Vertical Limit have gone on record to say that they were attracted to the "relationships" in the piece explains exactly how this film goes wrong--that and the name "Chris O'Donnell" toplining the cast credits.

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

We collected 182 opinions and they speak loud and clear: VERTICAL LIMIT IS GREAT! It received some of the highest opinions I've seen. To have so few low ratings is very rare and indicates a movie that had very wide appeal. Virtually everyone loved it. I highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys action and suspense.

My Thoughts: (before opinions collected)
WOW! Talk about edge-of-your-seat suspense, this movie contains so much suspenseful action that I was actually wishing it would let up for a minute. If this looks like the type of movie you would like, I'm confident you will enjoy it very much.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

Young climber Peter Garrett (Golden Globe nominee Chris O'Donnell) must launch a treacherous and extraordinary rescue effort up K2, the world's second highest peak. Confronting both his own limitations and the awesome power of nature's uncontrollable elements, Peter risks his life to save his sister, Annie (Robin Tunney), and her summit team (Bill Paxton and Nicholas Lea) in a race against time.

Years before, brother and sister were devastated by a horrific climbing accident. Peter made a split-second decision to cut their father's rope to save his sister and himself. In the aftermath, Peter isolated himself as a nature photographer; Annie chased her father's dream to climb the world's highest peaks.

Now, she is trapped in an icy grave at 26,000 feet— a death zone above the vertical limit of endurance where the human body cannot survive for long. Every second counts as Peter enlists the help of a crew of fellow climbers, including eccentric, reclusive mountain man Montgomery Wick (Scott Glenn), to ascend the chilling might of the world's most feared peak to save her.
