Movie Type (Genre) Heading
Action Suspense Drama - Proof of Life is a dramatic thriller focused on the process of hostage negotiations in South America. Fans of Russell Crowe will probably enjoy his rugged, heroic presence, as will viewers who enjoy tense drama with a political angle. Viewers expecting a more romantic story are likely to be disappointed, and viewers who prefer Meg Ryan in lighter roles may find her mis-cast in this dramatic role. Viewers should also be aware of the high level of violence.

Critic's Review Heading
Above Average
Be prepared to be sorely disappointed if you go to Proof of Life expecting to see the “Sparks A-Flyin’ Between Meg and Russell Show;” the relationship between Ryan and Crowe’s characters is the worst reason to see the film. While Proof of Life’s major selling point sits there limply in the center of the film, there’s plenty of great stuff going on around the perimeter. Proof of Life had to give the on-screen relationship heat in order to give meaning to the Bowmans’ marital strife and to the quiet heart-to-hearts between Alice and Terry. It doesn’t. The genuine shame is that it’s such a strong piece of work in virtually every other respect that it’s still worth watching.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

Peter Bowman (DAVID MORSE), an American engineer in a Latin American country is captured by anti-government forces. When the rebels learn his identity they demand $6 million for his safe return. However, his US employer is on the verge of insolvency and will not provide the ransom.

Peter's wife Alice (MEG RYAN) is forced to deal with the matter on her own. She retains the services of freelance professional hostage negotiator Terry Thorne (RUSSELL CROWE). With the help of a fellow negotiator, Dino (DAVID CARUSO), and a trio of highly trained mercenaries, Terry mounts a bold operation to rescue Peter that could as easily result in disaster as in triumph.
