An advertising exec gets a whole new
outlook on his life when a fluke accident give him the ability to read women's
minds. At first, this "gift" provides him with way too much
information, but he begins to realize he can use it to good effect, especially
when it comes to outwitting his new boss. He soon finds himself falling in love and
ultimately understanding what women want.
Romantic Comedy - Enjoyable romantic comedy with an interesting premise that isn't
well-developed. Effective holiday "counter programming" for those
who are tired of movies striving for Oscar nominations.
PROFANITY: No GD's or F-words. Quite a few somewhat milder profanities. SEX/NUDITY: Sexual references and revealing clothes. No nudity or sex. VIOLENCE: None DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Some smoking and social drinking. One marijuana usage. ACTION: None COMEDY: Lots of humor throughout.
With What Women Want, director Nancy Myers (who was involved with both of the Steve Martin Father of the Bride movies before directing The Parent Trap re-make) has fashioned cinematic cotton candy - all sugar and air. Her few attempts at making a pro-female empowerment statement are so feeble that they get lost in the storyline. Nevertheless, she understands the essence of the romantic comedy formula, and applies it in a manner that is infectious. Added to that is the undeniable appeal of Mel Gibson, who exudes energy and oozes charm. Gibson's dynamic personality elevates the film - this is the most drive he has shown in several years. A year from now, movie-goers are unlikely to remember What Women Want with any degree of clarity, but, in an era of largely disposable and forgettable motion pictures, there are far worse ways to spend a couple of hours.
OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
High opinions from most of the 280 moviegoers polled. There were a fair number who rated it just a bit on the low side. No one disliked it. The main complaint was that it was a little slow. Because so many gave it high marks, I would say your chances of enjoying it are high. Even if you don't love it, like most did, you will at the very least find it enjoyable, most of the time.
Publisher Comments: (before opinions collected) What a Hoot! Mel Gibson is great fun to watch. You can tell he's having a blast in this role. Lots of Laughs throughout! If you enjoy silly, lighthearted comedies, this is a great one.
Nick Marshall was the ultimate man's man. A charming, irrepressible bachelor living on the A-list of life, he loved listening to Sinatra and, like the Chairman of the Board himself, thought he had the world on a string.
Then one night, in the privacy of his Rat Pack dream apartment, that string began to unravel when he got an unexpected jolt, which opened his eyes and ears more than he could have imagined. Or ever dreamed of.
Now, Nick Marshall, hot shot advertising executive and self-proclaimed God's gift to women, suddenly found that he had another gift when he discovered he could hear the inner most thoughts of every women he came in contact
