Thriller Horror - Anyone who enjoyed The Silence of the Lambs is sure to be disappointed by this half-baked sequel. Sacrificing psychological complexity and scares in favor of extreme gore, this film is certainly inappropriate for children, and definitely not one for the squeamish.

To get the most pressing question out of the way: Hannibal, the long-awaited sequel to 1991's The Silence of the Lambs, is a huge step down from its multiple Oscar-winning predecessor. But then again, expecting a follow-up to completely hold its own alongside one of the great films of the past decade is perhaps a bit too much to ask, so one hopes Hannibal could at least be a decent film in its own right. Yet it isn't, and that fact, more than anything else, is why Hannibal fails--as its own individual cinematic entity, it is simply unable stand alone.

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

The opinions are very mixed. Teens, both male and female, rated it quite high. Adults, again both male and female, rated it fairly high. A little better than half of the moviegoers indicated they really enjoyed it, rating it "Very Good" or above. Of the remaining moviegoers, most rated it as "Good" to "Fair," which is pretty low. A few even rated it as "Poor" and "Terrible." I suspect these didn't like the gore.

Since this is a low cost rental, I can recommend "Hannibal." I believe most will enjoy it, at least to some degree, but you really must read the detailed content before deciding to see this movie.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
Hannibal continues the story begun in The Silence of the Lambs. Ten years have passed since Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) escaped from custody, ten years since FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore) interviewed him in a maximum-security hospital for the criminally insane. The doctor is now at large in Italy, gloriously at liberty in an unguarded world. But Starling has never forgotten her encounters with Dr. Lecter – his cold voice still haunts her dreams.

Mason Verger remembers Dr. Lecter too. Verger was Dr. Lecter's sixth victim, and, though hideously disfigured, has survived. The solitary heir to his family's fortune, he uses the resources of his inheritance to exact his revenge. Verger realizes that in order to draw Lecter out into the open, he must dangle an irresistible bait: Clarice Starling.
