Critic's Review Heading
Average
Enemy at the Gates has all the elements necessary for a compelling war film, but the lack of character depth coupled with director Jean-Jacques Annaud's detached style, makes watching this movie an uninvolving experience. The cat-and-mouse games between the lead characters, which form the movie's backbone, are not suspenseful. Instead, they feel perfunctory and obligatory. The various subplots, which have been added to give the story additional meat, are predominantly underdeveloped. Enemy at the Gates squanders too many opportunities. For all of its impressive technical qualities, this movie ends up as a mediocre and mostly forgettable war film.

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

VERY HIGH OPINIONS! Ladies, this is a little more of a guys movie, due to the graphic war scenes. The female opinions were high, but not as high as from the males. What saved it from being a total guys movie is the love story and the fact that the most graphic war scenes are mostly confined to the first 30-45 minutes of the movie. It then becomes more of a basic drama with the love story thrown in for the ladies.

So guys, if this looks like your type of movie DON'T MISS IT!!! Seeing the absolutely incredible realism of the war scenes is worth the cost. The rest of the movie is just a nice bonus.

Ladies, if graphic war scenes are not your cup of tea, hide your eyes for the first 30 minutes, at least. :-) Then you'll probably be able to stomach the rest of the violence as you enjoy the drama and love story.

My Thoughts: (before opinions collected)
Incredible movie! The war scenes are SO realistic. They're very similar, in graphic detail, to "Saving Private Ryan." After the first thirty minutes or so, the story slows down a bit and becomes more of a drama/love story than a war movie. I feel very confident this movie will receive some very high opinions from moviegoers. Due to the very graphic killings, this movie isn't going to be for everyone. Those that aren't bothered by this, should find this movie very enjoyable.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE

While the Nazi and Russian armies hurl rank after rank of soldiers at each other and the world fearfully awaits the outcome of the battle of Stalingrad, the celebrated Russian sniper, Vassili Zaitsev (Jude Law) quietly stalks his enemies one man at a time. His fame, however, soon thrusts him into a duel with the Nazi's best sharpshooter, Major Konig (Ed Harris), and the two find themselves waging an intense personal war while the most momentous battle of the age rages around them.

Unassuming and self-contained, Vassili is just an ordinary man who performs his duty with extraordinary skill. Realizing his propaganda value, Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), a Soviet political officer, builds this simple soldier from the Urals into a much-needed national hero. After a string of defeats by the Nazis, the Soviet Union is on the verge of collapse, and the loss of Stalingrad to the invaders could ensure final victory for the Nazis in Europe. Khrushchev (Bob Hoskins) himself has been sent by Stalin to oversee the city's defense.

Vassili's fierce example, as documented by Danilov, boosts the defenders' will to go on fighting despite overwhelming odds. Danilov, however, soon becomes jealous of the man he created when, in the midst of war, they both fall in love with Tania (Rachel Weisz), one of the many courageous women soldiers fighting alongside the men.

The Germans send for their best sniper, Major Konig (Ed Harris), to track down Vassili and kill the man who has become famous in the German as well as Russian ranks. With exquisite patience and skill, each man stalks the other, fighting his war in solitude while countless men are dying all around them in the rubble of Stalingrad.
