Storyline Heading
A brutal, primal place where apes are in charge and humans scavenge for subsistence, hunted and enslaved by the tyrannical primates. The sudden appearance of one man, alien to the present order and unaffected by its oppression, serves as a challenge to the status quo and a catalyst for revolutionary social change.

Critic's Review Heading
Above Average

The above rating is an average of the critic reviews below.

(Close new window when finished with Full Reviews)

Entertainment Weekly   Full Review
Above Average ''Planet of the Apes, whose makers have claimed that it is less a remake than a reimagining, features backlot spectacle, a cast of hundreds battle, a weak whisper of gladiatorial vengeance -- everything, in fact, but imagination.''

Roger Ebert  Full Review
Above Average "Planet of the Apes is the kind of movie that you enjoy at times, admire at times, even really like at times, but is it necessary?''

USA TODAY  Full Review
Good "There's one reason to see Tim Burton's flawed, somewhat declawed but often amusing do-over of Planet of the Apes. The apes. What else?''

TV Guide Online  Full Review
Average "Rick Baker's ape suits are astonishing, and the cast works overtime to strike a balance between a civilized demeanor and fundamentally animal behavior. Unlike the first film's stiffly upright simians, these intelligent apes have retained their animal nature: They write with their feet, bare their fangs when they're angry and drop to all fours to run. But admirable and fascinating though these efforts are, the film is sorely deficient on the story front.''

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

As could be expected, the guys enjoyed this movie the most, giving it very high marks. Another expected was the very low opinions of a few moviegoers. This type of sci-fi movie (far fetched, i.e. talking apes) always has some people who give low opinions. I suspect most of these are from those who aren't big sci-fi fans who attended this movie with a sci-fi fan.

As for the ladies, only around half truly enjoyed the apes. Luckily only a few rated it very low.

The only recurring negative comment was that they didn't like the ending, but there were actually almost as many positive comments about the ending.

If you have any interest in "Planet of the Apes," then I recommend it. I believe most will enjoy it very much.
