Jamal toils, unhappily, at Medieval World, a theme park that looks like it has not been renovated, or had customers, since the Dark Ages. After falling into the park's fetid moat, Jamal crawls out into fourteenth century England, a world of knights in shining armor and damsels in distress, not to mention questionable hygiene and really lousy plumbing.

Critic's Review Heading
Below Average

The above rating is an average of the critic reviews below.

(Close new window when finished with Full Reviews)

Entertainment Weekly   Full Review
Average "..there are moments when ''Black Knight'' does recall the amusing incongruities of Terry Gilliam's first solo directorial venture, the 1977 medieval grungefest Jabberwocky.  Lawrence, as always, exerts the appeal of a con man too lightweight to buy into his own con. He'd be funnier, though, if he didn't insist on being the only funny thing in the room.''

Chicago Sun-Times  Full Review
Below Average "The short shrift given co-stars and plot-building tosses the ball back at Lawrence, who, though often deft at delivering the comic asides--he almost sells the flattery "You glow girl"--isn't able to get us to connect emotionally to the story. It is a delicate balancing act but he, like the role his character feigns for the king, needs to be both jester and messenger in order to ensure his future.''

TV Guide Online  Full Review
Below Average "Comparisons to Mark Twain's much-filmed A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court are both inevitable and highly unflattering to this often painfully unfunny fish-out-of-water saga. The lame and apparently tacked-on ending (which seems to crib footage from GLADIATOR), suggests the rather terrifying prospect of a Roman-era sequel. Five words: Be afraid, be very afraid. ''

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

Pretty much what I predicted below. Most moviegoers enjoyed "Black Knight" very much, but there were quite a few who thought it was just OK. Where you fall in this range will depend entirely on how much you like Martin Lawrence's style of humor.

As I've seen often with these types of silly comedies, a person who enjoys silly comedies will take a companion who's not necessarily a fan and they are the ones that seem to provide most of the lower opinions.

Publisher Comments: (before opinions collected)
A silly, light-weight comedy that's just funny enough to be worth a look. It's not great, but it is a fun diversion. If the previews look good to you then go see "Black Knight," because the previews show exactly the type of silly comedy you're going to see.

It would probably help if you were a fan of Martin Lawrence's style of humor, but it's not that necessary. There is enough other humor to satisfy most moviegoers.

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
The world of the Middle Ages was populated with heroes whose feats and derring-do have captivated multitudes through the centuries. Legends with names like Lancelot, Galahad, Gawain and ... Jamal Walker!?

Jamal toils, unhappily, at Medieval World, a theme park that looks like it has not been renovated, or had customers, since the Dark Ages. After falling into the park's fetid moat, Jamal crawls out into fourteenth century England, a world of knights in shining armor and damsels in distress, not to mention questionable hygiene and really lousy plumbing.

Now a stranger in a very strange land, Jamal falls in with a dissolute knight, a beautiful woman with some very modern ideas, and a rebellion against an evil king. The Middle Ages will never be the same, as Jamal uses twenty-first century street smarts and moves to help his new friends. In return, Jamal gets a lot more than just a history lesson.
