He was the first tabloid star of the twentieth century and remains the most notorious and enigmatic serial killer in history. Jack the Ripper committed five heinous, ritualistic murders during a ten-week span in London in the fall of 1888, creating a frenzied atmosphere of gossip, rumor and terror. He was never caught.
Crime Mystery Thriller - Those expecting an especially gory, horror movie-style retelling of
the Jack the Ripper story may be somewhat let down by this film,
which is more of an atmospheric thriller. The violence is still
strong, however, as is the sexual content, making it inappropriate
PROFANITY: Frequent use of strong profanity. SEX/NUDITY: Brief sex with nudity. VIOLENCE: Graphic, bloody killings. DRUGS/ALCOHOL: Frequent tobacco, alcohol, and opium use. ACTION: One big scene involving a runaway carriage. COMEDY: None.

Review Excellent "From Hell, an entrancingly literate and
old-fashioned mystery with a shivery note of dread at its center, is that rare
thing, a horror film of genuine artistry and excitement. The Hughes brothers are
more interested in disturbing you than in getting you to leap under your seat in
fright -- yet they are hardly ones to step back from operatic mayhem.''

Review Good "..a visually impressive motion picture that stuns the senses
with its surreal depiction of late-19th century London and its orgy of
uncensored violence. From Hell is a good deal better than Depp's last
atmospheric horror story, Sleepy Hollow. This movie has more realized
potential, including a storyline that goes somewhere.''
Review Good "Watching the film, I was surprised how consistently it
surprised me. Despite its gothic look, "From Hell" is not in the
Hammer horror genre. Despite its Sherlockian hero, it's not a Holmes and Watson
story. Despite its murders, it's not a slasher film''
Review Average "Hell is gorier than past Ripper pics, which doesn't
mean that the Hughes brothers necessarily bring anything fresh to the story.
With almost as many subplots as corpses, the movie maintains its mild
watchability only because the Ripper saga still engrosses.''

OPINION OVERVIEW The following is the original "What's Worth
Watching" write-up for this movie.
Teens enjoyed the movie slightly more than adults. The low number of "Fantastic" opinions and the relatively high number of "Good" and lower opinions indicates a good but not great movie. There were a lot of negative comments about the movie being too long and too slow/boring. This tells me that many moviegoers were expecting a fast paced action/thriller, which this movie isn't. It's more of a psychological thriller. If you go in knowing that, you should probably enjoy it, at least to some degree.
With this many very low opinions of "Poor" and "Terrible," I highly recommend that you read all that we offer for this movie before deciding to see it.
