Critic's Review Heading
Very Good

The above rating is an average of the critic reviews below.

(Close new window when finished with Full Reviews)

Entertainment Weekly   Full Review
Good "Substitute Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, and Edward Norton for the thief, the fence, and the hothead, and you've got ''The Score,'' or at least ''The Score'' minus half a dozen gotchas.''

James Berardinelli, Internet Critic  Full Review
Very Good "This is one of the best American thrillers to come out in the last year or two. It's consistently fun, occasionally funny, and will have viewers on the edges of their seats on more than one occasion.''

Roger Ebert  Full Review
Very Good "Heist is the kind of caper movie that was made before special effects replaced wit, construction and intelligence. This movie is made out of fresh ingredients, not cake mix. Despite the twists of its plot, it is about its characters.''

TV Guide Online  Full Review
Good "There's never one twist too many in a David Mamet thriller, it's always more like two or three. But for most of its running time, this '70s-style caper picture (think grit, not gloss) is solidly entertaining and surprisingly free of the Mamet-isms that can suck the life right out of the most tightly crafted story.''

OPINION OVERVIEW
The following is the original "What's Worth Watching" write-up for this movie.

Moviegoer Opinions:

My prediction below was right on the money. A few people really enjoyed it, but MOST found it decent but certainly not great. A significant number rated it pretty low, giving it reviews of "Good" and "Fair."

A lot of the opinions are "Very Good," which we've learned is sort of the lowest good review and indicates a movie people found enjoyable, but not great. Anything lower than "Very Good" is getting pretty low and is usually accompanied by negative comments, which is true for this movie.

Gender didn't seem to make much difference. Males rated it only slightly higher. Younger males seemed to enjoy it slightly more than others.

I would suggest that you read all the comments and the contents (lots of profanity), before deciding to see "Heist."

Publisher Comments: (before opinions collected)
Not a bad movie, but certainly not great. I see movies for free, but if I'd had to pay seven bucks to see "Heist," I would have been disappointed. It just didn't have much action or suspense and it didn't make me care much about any of the characters. It had a few nice plot twists, but I doubt they're enough to satisfy the average moviegoer. At best, I would recommend this to Gene Hackman fans for a matinee. Later it will make a good rental.

(After seeing the critic reviews, I'm sure there will be some moviegoers who will enjoy this type of movie more than I did. So, I will say that if your taste in movies runs close to that of critics, then you will probably find "Heist" enjoyable.)

D ETAILED S TORYLINE
Joe Moore (GENE HACKMAN) has a beautiful young wife, money owed to him, and a job he loves. He's a thief.

His job goes sour when he gets caught on security camera tape. His fence, Bergman (DANNY DEVITO) reneges on the money he's owed, and his wife (REBECCA PIDGEON) may be betraying him with the fence's young lieutenant (SAM ROCKWELL).

Moore and his partner, Bobby Blane (DELROY LINDO) and their utility man, Pinky Pincus (RICKY JAY) find themselves broke, betrayed, and blackmailed. Moore is forced to commit his crew to do Bergman's one Last Big Job.

Will Bergman shop Moore to the police? Will Moore's wife trade him in for a younger model? Will Blane and Pincus cut their losses and get out? Who is to be believed, who is to be betrayed? Won't someone who's lied once, lie again?

Who's going to walk away smiling, and who's not going to walk at all?
